2tbspbutter
1 ½tspcinnamon
2cflour
1tspsalt
¼cshortening
1egg yolk
4-5tbspmilk
Instructions
In a large cast iron skillet, place blackberries, sugar, water, butter, and cinnamon.
Allow to cook over medium heat for 15-20 minutes, until the blackberries are broken down and tender to form a sauce.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Whisk to incorporate.
Using a knife, a pastry blender or a fork, cut in shortening until you get a mixture that is crumbly. This will become your topping.
Next, add milk a tablespoon at a time until you get the mixture moistened and it comes together, but, still loose. You will know that you don't need any more milk when you grab a handful and it turns into a ball when squeezed.
Drop the crumbly texture over the top of the blackberries and sauce. You'll notice that it will soak up quite a bit of the sauce.
I typically create a small "golf ball" sized ball and place it into the mixture. I like the texture better than just sprinkling it over the top like a true crisp.
Bake at 350 for 15-25 minutes - you want the dough to firm up and bake until golden brown.
Serve with vanilla ice cream and whipped cream should you dare!
