Bookcase Makeover

I tell you what this Playroom Makeover is kickin’ my butt! I don’t if it’s because I’ve been in a cast for the past 10 weeks {still have 4 to go and praying I don’t have to have surgery} or if this has truly been a lot of work…either way it’s gotta get done.

First thing I did was cleared out the toys that the kids hardly ever play with. Then once those were gone and donated I painted this bookcase. It seems like overnight all three of the kiddos want to read….constantly….all day….all night. I literally had to go buy new books last weekend because I was reading the same 5 books over and over and over to the littles!

So in the girls room I decided to take their bookshelf and make it a little easier on the eyes. I’m so over the dark wood in this house…it’s EVERYWHERE and it was at our old house as well. I just need to change it up!

Bookshelf Makeover BeforePin

This is seriously what the bookshelf looked like before I got my hands on it. It’s boring, wasn’t fun and needed a facelift. Now because this is a laminate bookshelf and not the real deal I knew I couldn’t paint a latex paint on it because it would get beat up, chip and peel. I’m sure once the kids realized how easy that paint would come off they’d go to town to remove it.

I also knew I didn’t want to do anything to big. I am a Mom of 3 and trying to find time to conquer a large project — well it just doesn’t happen! You can obviously see how long it has taken me to do this Playroom Makeover…it’s been at least 2 months now and I’m not even done. Honestly, the guy who was suppose to be sanding and staining the floors is what’s holding everything up. He’s giving us a REALLY good deal & he does amazing work, but damn, trying to get him here is nearly impossible.

Anyway.

What I ended up doing was taking some Americana Decor Chalky Paint & used a dry brush technique to give the bookshelf a bit of character and to brighten it up a bit. You see once the playroom is done I’m going into the girls room and redoing it!

I was originally going to put this bookshelf in the playroom, but, I like where it’s at. I’m also not tripping over book and believe it or not they actually stay in the bookshelf! I would love to have a little “reading nook” somewhere in the house for the kids to go to that’s nice and quiet, but, we don’t have the space…until then I’ll keep dreaming!

I love how it turned out! I told the kids once I got my part finished that they could do whatever they wanted to it. But, they loved it as well. They actually didn’t even want to touch it which is odd because the girls love playing with paint.

I can’t really explain how I achieved this look in text form so I made a quick video while I was transforming this bookshelf. Here’s how I did it:

Now once the chalky paint dried I sealed it with the Americana Decor Clear Creme Wax. I applied two coats just to ensure that there wasn’t going to be any chipping since the kids will be touching it. Not to mention if someone happens to color on it I can wipe it right off!

A Laminate Bookshelf Makeover That Used 2 Products & 20 MinutesPin

Isn’t the before and after amazing? This whole project took me about 30 minutes from wiping it down, painting it and then staining it. Sure I had to allow everything to dry in between, but, it was about 30 minutes standing in front of it and doing work! The longest part was applying the chalk paint.
