This Nutella hot chocolate recipe is slightly thicker than regular hot chocolate. It’s very rich and decadent. The Nutella flavor is present but not overpowering. It blends well with the other ingredients. We love making this on a cold winter’s night…usually after playing in the snow!

Cocoa powder can be substituted for the chocolate chips. I’ve used as little as ½ a teaspoon and worked up to a tablespoon depending on who is drinking the hot chocolate. It won’t be quite as sweet, but it’s a good substitution. The amount depends on preference.

Milk chocolate, bittersweet, or dark chocolate chips can be substituted in place of the semi-sweet chips. We normally stick to a 1:1 ratio with these. My son likes milk chocolate chips, but they are a little sweet to me. The bittersweet and dark chocolate chips will tone down the sweetness a bit. If you are used to a “sweet” hot chocolate, those may not be sweet enough. Again, it’s just a preference. 🙂

*All milk can be used instead of a milk/heavy cream mixture. I like the addition of the heavy cream to add richness and creaminess. Additionally, we’ve used dairy-free milk, like coconut milk, soy-milk, etc., and those have worked well.

*We’ve added ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon to the recipe, and it works well.

*The hot chocolate shouldn’t boil while it’s heating; otherwise, the fat in the milk and heavy cream may separate.

*This recipe can be doubled, tripled, etc. without issue. Just make sure the saucepan is large enough.

*Leftovers can be refrigerated and reheated in the microwave or on the stove top. We made a large batch, and I let the hot chocolate cool a bit, poured it into jars, and popped it in the fridge for a couple days. I’d recommend throwing it out after 3 days.

Nutella Hot Chocolate

Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 5 minutes
Total Time 10 minutes
Servings 2 cups

Ingredients

For the Hot Chocolate:

  • Cup Nutella
  • Cup Heavy Cream
  • ¼ Cup 2 Ounces Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips
  • 1 ½ Cups Whole Milk
  • ½ Teaspoon Vanilla

Optional Toppings:

  • Mini Marshmallows
  • Jumbo Marshmallows
  • Nutella Drizzle
  • Chocolate Syrup/Sauce
  • Marshmallow Creme
  • Whipping Topping/Cream

Instructions

  • In a small saucepan, heat the Nutella, heavy cream, and chocolate chips over low heat. Stir until the chocolate is melted and the ingredients are smooth.
  • Add the milk and vanilla. Stir constantly until the mixture begins to steep and tiny bubbles form around the edges of the pan.
  • Serve the hot chocolate immediately in heat-safe mugs with your favorite toppings.

Notes

*The Nutella, heavy cream, and chocolate chips melt very quickly. It’s not a good idea to start heating them and walk away from the stove. This mixture needs to be stirred constantly to keep the chocolate from sticking and burning.
*Pour the milk in slowly as it has a tendency to splash out of the pan (happened to me twice) when it hits the Nutella/chocolate chip mixture.
