Did you know that making your own beans from dried beans are much cheaper than buying canned beans? Many people are not sure how to cook beans so they just keep buying canned. Use this recipe to make Beans in an Instant Pot to help you save money and make healthier beans.

Variation to Beans in an Instant Pot

After you have learned how to make beans, you can decide what flavors you like in your beans.

  • Add Ham or Bacon
  • Vegetables–  A lot of people like to add carrots to their beans.
  • Favorite Seasoning – If you have a favorite seasoning that you like, you can add it to the beans.

How to Make Beans in an Instant Pot

Ingredients:

  1. 1 pound dried beans black beans, pinto beans, or chickpeas
  2. ½ white onion or yellow onion, peeled and left intact
  3. 1 TB extra virgin olive oil or avocado oil
  4. 2 medium garlic cloves peeled and left whole
  5. 2 bay leaves
  6. 1 tsp salt *
  7. 8 cups of water
Step by Step:
  1. Rinse the beans and pick out any undesirables (stones, etc.)
  2. Add the beans to the Instant Pot. Beans in the Instant PotPin
  3. Add all the ingredients, ending with the water.
  4. Lock the lid on and set the Instant Pot to Manual, High Pressure for 30 minutes (for black beans and pinto beans) or 40 minutes (for chickpeas). The valve on top should be set to Sealed.
  5. Once the beans are done cooking, let the pressure release naturally for 30 minutes before releasing the remaining pressure (use a hot pad holder or towel) and opening the lid. Cooked beans in the Instant PotPin
  6. Remove the aromatics (bay leaves, onions, garlic). Drain and rinse the beans, if desired. Or, you can store or serve the beans with some of the liquid. <–This all depends on how you plan to use the beans. If you’re storing the beans in the fridge (or freezer), I recommend storing the beans in some of the liquid.
