Every time I think of Blackberries, I think of “Betty Boop”. Betty was my “Ste” Grandmother who passed away unexpectedly after a 6 month battle with cancer and the reason I started My Heavenly Recipes. The only recipe I have from Betty Boop is our popular Crock-Pot Pot Roast Recipe. I honestly won’t make it anyway else and one my family LOVES!
Backstory: My Grandfather and Betty lived in a beautiful home in Hayesville, NC. I LOVED visiting because it was a quaint little town, was super quiet and just overall a sense of peace overcame me as I drove down their forever long driveway. On the side of the driveway, it was lined with blackberry bushes. Betty would walk up and down the driveway during the season and make homemade Blackberry Jam. It was THE BEST and it saddens me that I don’t have her recipe. She’d put it in jars and we could take whatever we wanted from her “canning closet” before we left. If Betty were still with us today, I’d grab some of those blackberries and serve her this Blackberry Crisp Recipe. She would have LOVED it! T

How to Make Blackberry Cobbler
In a large cast iron skillet, place blackberries, sugar, water, butter, and cinnamon.
Allow to cook over medium heat for 15-20 minutes, until the blackberries are broken down and tender to form a sauce.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Whisk to incorporate.
Using a knife, a pastry blender or a fork, cut in shortening until you get a mixture that is crumbly. This will become your topping.
Next, add milk a tablespoon at a time until you get the mixture moistened and it comes together, but, still loose. You will know that you don’t need any more milk when you grab a handful and it turns into a ball when squeezed.
Drop the crumbly texture over the top of the blackberries and sauce. You’ll notice that it will soak up quite a bit of the sauce.
I typically create a small “golf ball” sized ball and place it into the mixture. I like the texture better than just sprinkling it over the top like a true crisp.
Bake at 350 for 15-25 minutes – you want the dough to firm up and bake until golden brown.
Serve with vanilla ice cream and whipped cream should you dare!
