In this curio cabinet makeover, you’ll learn how a painted curio cabinet is a great way to bring new life to an old curio cabinet. It’s an easy DIY project!
Ya’ll. I can’t wait to share my curio cabinet makeover with you.
Honestly, can I just say how easy this project was? It took me about 4 hours from start to finish. The kids took about a 2 ½ hour nap that day so I was able to work and just get this project done in just a few hours.
Now, I will tell you I “acquired” this Curio Cabinet nearly 10 years ago, when I ran a friend of mines antique store. I had originally given it to my Mother in Law as a Mother’s Day gift to store her clown collection in. When we bought the house and she downsized into her senior apartment, she just didn’t have the space for this beauty so I held onto it.
Before the curio cabinet makeover, it was pretty much just a catch-all in the dining room. It was a hot mess, always dusty, making me feel sad and tired just looking at it. I knew I had to give it a makeover to give it new life….I think I could use a makeover too ?
Oh, and I was apparently “cleaning” on this day I snapped this picture. That Shark Rocket Powerhead vacuum is the shiznit! I replaced it with a Hoover Pet Windtunnel and can’t tell you how much more CRAP this thing gets out…
Anyway.
Curio Cabinet Makeover – After
This is what the Curio Cabinet looks like in its current state. It’s stunning. Functional. It matches my decor and I just can’t stop looking at it!
I am trying to pull this dining room together. The next furniture makeover will be that blue sideboard. It’s a very heavy piece, serves as a home for all my crafting supplies and as a buffet when we have guests over. I love how sturdy and heavy the piece is, but, it’s lacked attention since I bought it a year ago. I need to order handles and decide on a color once and for all for that bad boy…so please let me know if you have any suggestions!
I also need to repaint the entire dining room and get a new rug….out with the green and in with blues and grays! The more I do in this room the more I don’t want to leave and I do spend a lot of time in there so it should be pretty!
Supplies needed for this Curio Cabinet Makeover
There are very few products you need for this Curio Cabinet Makeover:
- Americana Decor Chalky Finish Paint, Relic
- Americana Decor Creme Wax, Brown
- 9-12 Packages of Decor Art Decou-Page Paper, Paisley Print
- Americana Decor Decou-Page
Now I gave this Curio Cabinet a good wipe down in all the nooks and crannies the night before. I let it dry completely overnight. Now you can do this the day of just allow to dry completely. I also removed the glass shelves on the inside and put away where the kids weren’t able to break them!
Next, I applied a coat of the Chalky Finish in the Relic color. This chalky paint dries relatively quickly so you’ll want to work faster than usual. I added a second coat of paint to the entire curio cabinet and allowed to dry.
Then was a test of my OCD and patience. My original idea was to put this Decou-Page Paper on the background, but, once I looked at the painted curio cabinet, I was having second thoughts. So I sent Jas a quick text and he said paper, so paper it was! And honestly, I’m so glad that he told me to put the paper in it because I think it just adds character, playfulness and so much needed the contrast of color.
To apply the paper I used a brush and covered the back side of a piece of the Decou-Page Paper. I then quickly placed it into the back of the cabinet making sure all the air bubbles and creases were smoothed out. Now because I’m OCD it took a little longer than I expected, but, I’m thankful I took my time because it could’ve turned out horrible! So patience is key here friends.
Once the paper was all applied I moved on to applying the Creme Wax. I wanted a little roughness, which is why I went this route. I could’ve totally done just a typical Creme Wax, but, I didn’t!
Then I took all the crap that was on my dining room table {did you happen to see that makeover!?) and placed all of the plating stuff that I use to photograph food pictures fromMyHeavenlyRecipes.com into the newly painted curio cabinet. This way I can see what I need, quick to access and it looks pretty!
