When you need a tutu in a specific color(s), you don’t sew and you need it quickly – you make a No Sew Tutu!
There’s been two times since the girls were little that I needed a tutu in a timely manner and in a specific color. One was for TT’s 1st Birthday pictures and the other was for TT’s Halloween Costume when she turned 4! And I just realize they were both for TT….Anyhow.
I had originally thought I could just head to Target and buy her a white skirt for her Halloween Costume. However, that ended up not happening. You won’t believe how hard it is to buy ANYTHING white in the fall! So what any Mom would do, I just went ahead and went for the DIY project. It probably was a little more expensive, but, we had fun creating it together and it came out better than I had expected!
Let’s get you started on how to make a No Sew Tutu – cause I don’t have time for all that!
The first step is to measure the child’s waist. I used a piece of ½″ string that I had leftover from another project. You want to make it an extra 3-4″ longer so that the child can grow into it and so that you are able to tie the tutu onto the child.
Next, measure out how long the pieces of tulle need to be. I ended up putting the “belt” on her and measured. Now because I didn’t want this to be a perfect tutu {I wanted the bunchiness and messiness to it…afterall we were making a Ghost costume!} when I went to tie the strand of tulle on it wasn’t even….I know my OCD could barely handle it, but, we got through it! So if you want a perfect looking tutu, make sure your lengths are even when you go to knot it onto the belt.
Now that you know the measurements it’s time to cut up the tulle! The easiest and quickest way I found to do is is to measure out half the length. Then as I am unravvling the roll I would do a fan fold. See how the starting piece is on the top? You’ll want to cut every other piece on the top. That gives you 1 piece of tulle like 10 times over! I hope that makes sense…
Now because TT didn’t want to stand the entire 2 hours it took me to make this No Sew Tutu {I came and went over the course of a few hours. I had kids to manage people! My life isn’t what you think it is!!!} I found this round box and tied the No Sew Tutu belt around it. This gave me a change to fan out the tutu and see what I was working with. You are probably asking how to attach the tulle to the belt…it’s pretty easy!
You simply just tie it in a knot and make sure it’s tight on the belt!
This is TT’s Ghost Costume! I think it turned out pretty darn cute. Plus, she has still continued to play in the tutu, so it’s kinda a win win for this Mommy. We ended up bunching up the tutu to give it a “ghostly” feel. The costume looked to perfect with the tulle on the tutu being “normal”. We gathered a pair of leggings and a long sleeve white shirt from her drawer to help keep her warm! Then we used the face paint we bought for sissy’s Witch Costume and painted her face like a ghost!
It is often pretty darn chilly out on Halloween here in Cincinnati. This is a cemetery that we visit on our rides at camp. It dates back to as for as the early 1800’s. It’s got a perfect view and a place where we often let those Chinese Lanterns off at. Every time we visit this cemetery we notice something new and exciting!
