Halloween DIY crafts are a great way to save money on indoor or outdoor Halloween decorations. This Halloween DIY decoration upcycles used plastic jugs and bottles into festive Halloween decor that can used anywhere. It’s a great Halloween craft for kids!
I love to find a way to repurpose items that I have in our home. It’s almost like a game or a challenge to myself to see what we can’t come up with next. That’s exactly what these Halloween DIY Decorations are….they are made from plastic jugs and had me thinking of how we can transform each and every one.
Ideas for Halloween DIY Decorations
Years ago I did the ever so popular Halloween Milk Jugs on Pinterest. I will admit they were super cute with glow sticks in them, but, this year I wanted to do something a bit more…I started saving plastic jugs to use for Halloween DIY decorations. I knew I wanted to do something similar to the milk jugs, just wasn’t sure what!
Then it hit me. Turn them into specific spooooky Halloween DIY decorations! I was thinking things like:
- A Mummy
- Frankenstein
- Ghosts
- Pumpkins
- Mummies
- A Skeleton
- Graveyard Markers
I literally had over a dozen bottles saved up, so I figured we had to get to work during craft time.
Supplies Needed to Make Halloween Decorations
I pulled out our Americana Paints in Titanium White, Pumpkin Patch and Ebony Black. I love to keep a plethora of craft supplies on hand because you never know when you get a creative idea. For me I’ve got to get to work on it quickly, otherwise I will forget and it won’t happen. I also noticed that my entire drawer is full of DecoArt products so I’ll be sharing more of my DIY craziness with ya’ll soon {there’s a bunch of projects coming just a fair warning!}
I grabbed the little TT girl….you may remember her from her TT’S Famous French Toast Recipe. This is her second appearance here at MHR and she was super excited to transform this plastic jug all by herself. She’s {almost} 4 and wants to do EVERYTHING.HERSELF. While she was quietly watching Frozen and brother was sleeping, I went ahead and made up the pumpkin and mummy. I couldn’t help myself and sometimes I just like to do things by myself. 😉
Then TT realized what I was doing and wanted to participate, so we had an early craft time!
This particular jug was supposed to be transformed into Frankenstein, however, TT decided it was to be a Candy Corn. You don’t argue with a 4 year old, so a Candy Corn it became! She actually did a VERY good job on this Halloween DIY decoration.
How to Make a Witch’s Broom Decoration
The next project was the witch’s broom from a bottle of Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing {is there any other type of Ranch?!?}. I wanted to do a color for the broom handle to make it a bit fun. I searched my paint drawer and found this Berry color from DecoArt’s Dazzling Mettalics line. I am seriously in love with this color ya’ll. I tend to love maroons, but, this is my favorite color right now. So much so that I’m going to be doing LOADS of fall and Christmas projects with it…I actually just placed a order on Amazon for a few more bottles. 😉
Then the BeanieGirl came home from school and was pretty livid at the fact we used paint. So she dabbled into the bottles and turned one of their old vitamin bottles into a ghost.
I think she did a marvelous job, don’t you!?? {I’m going to show the girls the comments, so please feel free to leave one!}
Pumpkin Mug Monster Tip
I will say for the Pumpkin we squeezed the Pumpkin Patch paint inside the jug. I put the lid on and shook it around to see what would happen. It took a few days with the lid off for it to dry, but, if you are going to leave your plastic jugs outside, this is the way to do it!
We gathered all the Halloween decorations and put them outside. I went to go purchase Mums to get ya’ll some good pictures, but, it’s a bit premature because when you are a blogger you do projects like this a bit earlier than everyone else!!!! But, I’ll get you a updated picture here soon, I promise!
Halloween DIY Decorations will you make?
Please leave me a comment… I can’t wait to hear about them!
