If you happen to be friend or family, this is my Famous Homemade Italian Spaghetti Sauce Recipe….the cat’s out of the bag ya’ll!
I’ve been making my own Homemade Italian Spaghetti Sauce recipe for probably 12 years now. The jarred sauce is great for quick and easy meals, but, it’s just as easy to make your own spaghetti sauce at home. If you are looking for a meat free sauce, just omit the hamburger in the recipe!
I love to give this Homemade Spaghetti Sauce Recipe as a gift. I pour it into a mason jar and tie a cute ribbon and give to new Momma friends, as a friendly gift or just because I love you and know you’ve been craving my sauce!
The joy of cooking for me is adapting a simple recipe and turning it into something of my own that I know my family will enjoy. If your family can’t stand the thought of onions, leave them out. If you enjoy garlic like my family {and trying to keep the vampires away!} you can add a few more cloves to the recipe. It’s all in taking the base and making it your own. That’s the joy of cooking…at least for me it is anyway!
How do you thin spaghetti sauce?
This is a great question! When you make a spaghetti sauce, typically you are boiling water for noodles. Once the noodles have cooked ladle the water from the pot into your spaghetti sauce. This will thin the spaghetti sauce and give it a bit of starchy flavor that you won’t get from plain water.
Ingredients Needed to Make a Italian Spaghetti Sauce
- hamburger
- onion
- 3-4 cloves of garlic
- diced tomatoes
- spinach
- sugar
- Tomato Sauce
- water
- dried basil
- Italian seasoning
How to Make Italian Spaghetti Sauce at Home
1. Brown hamburger and onion in a large skillet. If using a fattier hamburger, drain any grease and return to skillet.
2. Next, add in garlic, diced tomatoes and spinach. You are wanting to cook until the spinach wilts a bit.
3. Mix in tomato sauce, water, sugar, basil and Italian seasoning.
If you like for your spaghetti sauce to be a bit more runnier {is that even a word?!?} add a ⅓ of a cup of water at a time until you get the consistency that you desire.
If you like a thicker spaghetti sauce add a bit more tomato sauce or even a tablespoon of tomato paste to thicken it up.

Looks yummy! Spaghetti is my favorite food! I like to put hot sauce in mine.
Marci says
Hey Jessica – I’m not sure my 7 and 2 year old would enjoy the hot sauce 😉 However, I may sneak some in next time for the Hubby’s! Thank you for the tip!

Rita May says
do you salt and pepper the beef?
Marci says
Hi Rita! I don’t do a whole lot of salt and pepper in many of my recipes, except on those that really need it. I feel like there’s so much acidity in the tomato sauce and tomatoes that needs to be offset with a bit of sugar. You can always salt and pepper to your families liking. I like to say that all of my recipes are a basis or a easy way to get you started in the kitchen! Enjoy!

Hi Pam! Thank you for stopping by! I try and throw in the veggies that the kids aren’t willing to eat in dishes that they love 😉 The joys of Motherhood!
