How to Make Homemade Bread
In a small bowl, stir together the yeast, sugar, and warm water. Set aside for 5-8 minutes, until the yeast is foamy.
Pour the yeast mixture, softened butter, salt, and two cups of the flour into a large mixing bowl. Beat with an electric mixer until the ingredients are combined. Add the remaining flour, ½ cup at a time, mixing well between each addition.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface; knead for 5 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic. It will still be a bit sticky.
Place the dough into a large, oiled bowl. Turn the dough once to oil on all sides. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and set in a warm place to rise until doubled; approximately 90 minutes, depending on the temperature of the room.
Punch down the dough and divide into two loaves. Place the dough into two greased 9×5 inch loaf pans. Cover the pans with a clean kitchen towel and set aside in a warm place to rise until the dough reaches the top of the pans; approximately 1 hour.
Preheat the oven to 375F degrees. Bake the bread for 30 minutes at 375F degrees until the top of each loaf is golden brown.
Remove the loaves from the oven and place on a wire rack to cool. If desired, use a silicon kitchen brush to spread one tablespoon of melted butter over the top of each loaf for extra shine and flavor.
