What is the Difference Between Au gratin Potatoes and Scalloped Potatoes?

Some people think that au gratin and scalloped potatoes are the same things. The difference between au gratin and scalloped potatoes is that Au gratin potatoes have a crumb, crunchy topping.  Both recipes can have cheese and/ or ham.

Variation to Instant Pot Scalloped Potatoes

If you want to change the recipe:

  • Forget the Ham – You can easily make this recipe without the ham.
  • Add Bacon – If you want to take the taste of this scallop potatoes to a new level, add bacon. Bacon makes everything taste better.

Instant Pot Scalloped Potatoes

Ingredients
  1. 2 pounds Russet potatoes, peeled and sliced
  2. 1 cup chopped ham
  3. 1 cup heavy cream
  4. 1 cup milk
  5. 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  6. 1 ½ teaspoon salt
  7. 1 teaspoon black pepper
  8. ½ cup chopped parsley
  9. 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
Directions
Peel, rinse, and slice potatoes. Mix together the cream, milk, and seasonings. cream for scalloped potatoesPin
Layer the potatoes, ham, cheese and milk/cream mixture together in a casserole dish that fits into the Instant Pot on a trivet. scalloped potatoes layersPin
Make two layers: potatoes, ham, cheese, milk/cream, and repeat.
Add 1 cup of water to your pressure cooker. Place the trivet and your casserole dish.  Close the lid and set the pressure valve to seal. Set manual pressure time for 28 minutes. Instant Pot Scalloped potatoesPin
Allow for a quick release of pressure, stir and serve.

You can also add a little extra cheese to the top and put under the broiler for 5 minutes for a toasty look.
