The old traditional way to trim asparagus is to bend the stalk end of it until it snaps, but that really wastes part of the asparagus, needlessly! Often times that method will snap off over half of the asparagus, and you end up throwing away what should have and could have been eaten.
How to Trim Asparagus
So, take the individual piece of asparagus, and hold the spear end in your hand, and trim about an inch off the opposite end from the spear, or the stalk end. After you’ve trimmed all the pieces, take a carrot peeler, and just peel away the portion of the end that’s left, about a half-inch up on the piece, until you reach the tender center. That’s it, you’re done. Just repeat the steps for all the pieces of asparagus, and you’ll have tender vegetables, with no spiny ends in sight, and you won’t have snapped off 4 inches of your asparagus, needlessly!
