These Super Mario Cupcakes will be the talk of the party! Surprisingly easy to make, you will be asked to make these fun cupcakes over and over again!
Do you know a Super Mario fan? It doesn’t have to be a child; there are plenty of adults out there who love Super Mario – you know who you are! Well friends, I’m back with another easy boxed-cake mix cupcake recipe that will totally delight Super Mario fans young and old alike.
Why You’ll Love Super Mario Cupcakes
In this recipe we turn plain boxed-mix cupcakes into super fun, Super Mario Cupcakes by adding some colorful frosting, a few white candy melts, and store-bought fondant. These Super Mario Cupcakes will no doubt level up the fun at your next game night or birthday party!
This Super Mario Cupcakes recipe is perfect for getting little people involved, too. My kids love mixing food coloring into anything, for starters. We used red for these, but you could easily use green or blue or all three colors to make your Super Mario Cupcakes (just don’t mix them together because there are no brown mushrooms in Super Mario, y’all). While we waited for the cupcakes to bake and cool we played a very silly game of Pin the Mustache on Mario using some very rudimentary Mario and mustache drawings we quickly drew up. We also used tape because who gives children pins and then blindfolds them? (Hint: not me.)
When it’s time to decorate your Super Mario Cupcakes, there’s a cupcake task for every level of helper. Kids (and even decorating-challenged adults) can mix, frost, place the white candy melt dots, form the stars, or just add the ridiculously cute and expressive star eyes. Adding eyes to the stars had us all in stitches. There was a lot of “aww-ing” and giggling happening around our table, and a few very disproportionate eyes on our stars, which just added to the fun.
Whatever the occasion, game night, birthday party, or just a rainy Tuesday, these Super Mario Cupcakes are sure to bring on the fun and score big with your Super Mario fans!
How to Make Super Mario Cupcakes
Step #1: Prepare cupcakes according to cake mix directions and cool on a rack.
Tip: To save time, you can purchase pre-baked, plain cupcakes.
Step #2: Using an electric mixer, start mixing your butter and sugar. Add milk and continue mixing on medium-high speed. Add cocoa powder and mix until you achieve semi-stiff peaks.
Tip: You may need to add milk and/or powdered sugar, one tablespoon at a time to achieve your desired consistency.
Step #3: Add red gel food coloring to your buttercream and mix some more.
Step #4: Using an offset spatula, frost each one of your cupcakes with red buttercream. Add white candy melts – they will act as the mushroom’s “spots.”
Tip: Cut some of the white candies in half so that you can put them on the edge of the cupcake.
Step #5: Shape your yellow fondant into 3D stars and with the help of a toothpick, draw two eyes with black icing. Make enough so that you could place one on each cupcake.
