Whether you are celebrating back to school, the end of the school year or a fun-filled birthday party, these Crayon Cupcakes won’t disappoint and will be remembered for years to come!
Aren’t these Crayon Cupcakes ADORABLE? I just look at all the bright colors and it makes me one happy momma! I made these Crayon Cupcakes for an end-of-year school event and I think they are going to be a HUGE hit with kids and adults – so fun! These are definitely going to go fast.
I know I’m patting myself on the back here, but once again I’m helping you turn a simple boxed-cake mix and some store-bought fondant into a fun themed dessert with a big wow factor. It doesn’t get any better than this. I love this kind of easy recipe because you can be a beginner baker and still make something like these Crayon Cupcakes that look and taste totally impressive.
I used to avoid recipes using fondant. Fondant just seemed fancy and beyond my skill level as a baker/decorator. Then I discovered you could buy premade fondant in stores. (Imagine majestic harp music in the background.) I threw caution to the wind one day and bought some and it was so easy (and fun) to play work with that I was adding fondant decorations to everything for a while. Cakes, cupcakes, pork chops. 😉 Seriously though, it’s an exceptionally simple way to take your goodies to the next level. Give fondant a try with these Crayon Cupcakes and unleash your creative side!
Can I make my own fondant?
Yes, but … for these Crayon Cupcakes, I was trying to keep things elementary (LOL! Pun totally intended!) by cutting out a step. You certainly can make and use your own fondant. Fondant is easy to make yourself and cheaper than store-bought. However, for first-time fondant users, I do recommend buying the fondant so you can get a good idea of what fondant texture is supposed to look and feel like. Plus, it’s easier, which is always welcome when you are doing something for the first time, right? You can pick up fondant at Michael’s, Walmart, or order it on Amazon. It’s fairly accessible these days.

How to Make Crayon Cupcakes
Step #1: Prepare your cupcakes according to box’s directions. Allow to cool completely before decorating.
Step #2: Using an electric mixer, beat butter, confectioners’ sugar and milk on high. These ingredients will make your buttercream. Continue mixing on high until buttercream forms stiff peaks.
Step #3: Using a piping bag, frost each of your cupcakes.
Step #4: Take 12 of your cupcakes and draw some squiggles with your blue gel frosting. Do the same with your other 12 cupcakes with your green gel frosting.
Step #5: To form the fondant crayons, roll out spheres that are about 1.5 inches in diameter. Roll each one out into a cylindrical form. Pinch one end to create the “tip” of the crayon.
Step #6: Using a toothpick and your black gel frosting, draw two thin black lines on each crayon.
Step #7: Place one fondant crayon on each cupcake (with its respective squiggle color, of course!). Enjoy!
