It’s time! My Dining Room is slowly transforming and this China Hutch Makeover couldn’t have turned out any better!
You may recognize this China Hutch from my Farmhouse Inspired Dining Room Table Makeover that I did. You see, I’m on a mission to transform the dining room and the kitchen. These are the two rooms that have been neglected since we moved in three years ago. They are also the two rooms that I spend the most time in. With every extra cent that I make from MyHeavenlyRecipes.com this is where I pour my money into. {I’ll have more on that in a few other DIY Projects!}
Anyhow.
This China Hutch was my Grandmothers. Somehow my Mom ended up acquiring the piece and at the same time I acquired the Dining Room Table I also acquired this beauty. Now this piece is HEAVY. Like I can’t believe it’s been moved as many times as it has. Over time it’s just been kinda a collect all place and acquires junk daily. I knew I wanted to do a China Hutch makeover on this piece, but, was at a loss as to whether to make it light or dark. Once I completed my Curio Cabinet Makeover I knew instantly I wanted these two pieces to look as if they were sold in one of those high end furniture stores as a set….
As you can tell from the picture above this China Hutch was original, lacked character, housed everything from liquor to crafts and everything in between. Now you wouldn’t tell it from this picture, but, I’ve got Jason’s Mothers China that she never used (it’s gorgeous) and I also have a few plates from my Grandmother who owned this China Hutch. I felt like they had to be displayed in here, but, the way that it was, I wasn’t doing them justice. So I knew with this China Hutch Makeover my end result was to remove the clutter and display the china with honor.
Just like the Curio Cabinet Makeover the first step was to clean the China Hutch really well. I did that with some Krud Kutter that I had picked up for my Kitchen Cabinet Makeover (stay tuned, I’m in the process of doing this now!). The next morning I got up and applied a single coat of Americana Decor Chalky Paint in Relic. This dries really fast and was going to apply the Americana Decor Creme Wax in Brown the next day, but, decided to do it after allowing the entire piece to dry for an hour.
As you can tell from the picture above the top has the Chalky Finish and the Creme Wax. I stopped to take a picture so that you can see the depth and dimension the China Hutch is going to have. The Chalky Finish needs to have some sort of wax on it to protect the paint. You can do a clear wax and it would be just fine. But, I wanted to add some antiquey-ness {that’s totally not even a word!} and age to it, but, make it look like it’s been this way all it’s life…whatever you do, you’ve got to use a wax otherwise the chalky finish will end up looking horrible after awhile. Whether it’s knicks from the kids throwing toy cars at it, marker or food…it doesn’t wipe!
I wanted to get a detailed shot for you to see the contrast!
The last and final step was to apply the Decor Art Decou-Page Paper in Paisley Print. From doing the Curio Cabinet I knew I had to start at the corner of the bottom and work my way out and then up. This took me 17 papers for this particular China Hutch Makeover. I could’ve done it with Stencil and paint, but, that’s a lot more tedious and I didn’t have time for all that. Plus, I had already done the Curio Makeover and wanted it to match…so I was sorta stuck 😉
I hope that you love this China Hutch Makeover as much as I do. I was literally in tears when I had finished it. I was a bit nervous about doing this piece, because I didn’t want to ruin it. But, it turned out even better than I had expected!
What’s your favorite Makeover you’ve ever DIY’d?
My bottle of Patro Silver has never looked so good!
I ended up moving the pieces around in the Dining Room to make it flow. I’ve got to paint the walls, get a new area rug and possibly paint my buffet to match…I’m still up in the air on that!
UPDATE: I ended up painting my Buffet and LOVE how it turned out! I use it almost daily and haven’t had any issues with chipping!
I bought this piece last year from a friend of mine {Hi Jules!} for $100. My intention was to paint it white, but, with the cabinets going a lighter color and the walls going light, I’m thinking I might go ahead and paint it to match the Curio Cabinet and the China Hutch. What do you say?!?

Marci, what an awesome job. Love Love Love the colors. I, too, inherited my girlfriends hutch and dining table after her husband died, and it is truly outdated. I have been wanting to redo them both, but cautious about her feelings on it. Your table and hutch are so pretty that I think she would love them. Mind if I copy…purest form of flattery. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day.

Hi. I noticed you are missing the pulls on some of the doors. I just wanted to let you know that I was missing a similar pull on an old piece I inherited and I found a very similar one on houseofantiquehardware.com. I replaced all the pulls and the new ones fit and look like the originals. NIce job BTW!

LOL That’s so funny! I actually ended up finding some at a local “hardware shop”.
