Is it hard to make these Santa Hat Cupcakes? Not at all, actually, it’s quite easy!  The recipe here is more about the design, so grab your favorite red velvet box cake mix and get ready to wow your guests.

Are Santa Hat cupcakes just for kids?  Nope!  Remember how I told you that they had a classy look to them?  That means, that the adults are going to feel good eating them too!  I mean, lots of adults are going to be happy to eat any cupcake, but these ones don’t scream “little kid treat.”

Is it messy to make these Santa Hat cupcakes?  Well, any baking project is going to be just as messy as you let it, however, I do recommend an apron for these ones.  I don’t know about you, but that red frosting sure seems to like its way onto my clothes whenever I decorate with it. red velvet cupcakes with white icing, red icing and mini marshmallowPinWHY IT WORKS:

  • These cupcakes are a delicious holiday dessert and holiday decor in one!
  • They are perfect for potlucks or holiday parties.
  • Great for food gifts too!  Pack them up in an appropriate sized (so the frosting doesn’t get squished) disposable carrying dish along with a card and a bow and you have a gift!
RECIPE VARIATIONS:
  • Need a lot of cupcakes?  Double or triple your batch!
  • If you don’t like red velvet cupcakes, these look equally cute with white or even chocolate cupcakes.

COOK’S TIPS:
  • Be sure to use a thick enough layer of icing to create the Santa Hat effect.
  • Be sure to cool your cupcakes completely before starting the frosting stage.
  • You can adjust the amount of food coloring used to achieve your desired color of red.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO MAKE SANTA HAT CHRISTMAS CUPCAKES:
  • Red Velvet Cake Mix (and ingredients box calls for)
  • 2 tubs of White Icing
  • Red Food Coloring
  • ¼ a cup of Cocoa Powder
  • Mini Marshmallows
  • Cupcake Liners (color of your choice)
  • Icing Pipping Kit (found in the baking section) optional
HOW TO MAKE SANTA HAT CHRISTMAS CUPCAKES:

Start by preparing your red velvet cake batter according to box instructions.
Fill cupcake liners ½ of the way full and bake according to box instructions.
While baking prepare your red icing.
Place 1 tub of white icing in a large mixing bowl. Add about 10 drops of red food coloring (it takes quite a bit.) Mix until well blended with a hand mixer.
At this time your icing is probably closer to pink. Add in ¼ a cup of cocoa powder to darken it up, and mix well.
Add in ten more drops of food coloring and mix until well blended. Repeat this process until you have achieved the color red you desire.
I chose to use a pipping kit for my icing. At this time I filled one icing bag with white icing, and one with red icing.
