My Hubby enjoys his Manwich with a side of mac n cheese as well as a spoonful on his Manwich Sandwich! For me, I like a open sandwich with a little Mac N Cheese and lots and lots of fruit. I don’t know what it is, but, Homemade Manwich is comfort food at it’s finest!
How Do I Make a Manwich Sloppy Joe Sandwich?
Watch me make it live…
It’s really pretty easy.
Step #1: brown a pound of hamburger in a large skillet, breaking it down into ground pieces.
Step #2: while the meat is browning, chop up your peppers and onions, ensuring they are all bite size or smaller pieces.
Step #3: drain off any fat that is left in your skillet.
Step #4: saute the onion and pepper for 3-4 minutes, just to make tender before adding back in the meat.
Step #5: turn heat down to medium low and stir in tomato sauce, cumin, salt and pepper.
For me I enjoy just half of a piece of bread, open faced style. I eat it with a fork and avoid the extra calories that the top bun has! If you want to skip the carbs all together you can place a scoop in a piece of bib lettuce.

How many servings do you estimate this makes? Maybe a better question is how many hamburger buns does it fill? Adding this to a recipe booklet for my sons heading off to college 🙂
Thanks!

Hey Tammy – what a great idea. Hopefully your son puts the booklet to good use. So this recipe makes the same amount as the canned stuff. We eat ours a bit differently. I would say it’s a safe bet that it would make 4 healthy sized sandwiches. Let me know how it turns out!

This looks yummy! What brand of tomato sauce do you recommend using?
Marci says
I use Hunt’s and grab them when they are on sale. You can use whatever (they don’t pay me to say that!)…although, I wish they would!

Have you tried putting the open sandwich under a grill and melt cheese on top of the meat – so nice.
Marci says
No! I have never thought to top Manwich with cheese! We may have to try that next time!
